Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability (LOHAS) describes a $209 billion U.S. marketplace for goods and services focused on health, the environment, social justice, personal development and sustainable living. The LOHAS Marketplace serves a consumer movement identified by sociologist and author Paul H. Ray, Ph.D. Dr. Ray found a group of educated consumers he calls "Cultural Creatives," who make conscientious purchasing and investing decisions based on social and cultural values. They represent a sizable group, as approximately 19 percent of the adults in the U.S are currently considered LOHAS consumers. This consumer base is also enjoying tremendous growth worldwide. They worry about the environment, want products to be produced in a sustainable way and spend money to advance what they see as their personal development and potential.

It may appear that the five LOHAS sectors have little in common:

  • Sustainable Economy
  • Healthy Lifestyles
  • Ecological Lifestyles
  • Alternative Healthcare
  • Personal Development
The interconnections between global economies, cultures, environments, and political systems play a large role in the holistic worldview of the typical LOHAS Consumer, but equally important are the interconnections of mind, body and spirit within individuals.
